The periodic table Flashcards
What does the group number tell us?
The number of electrons on the outer shell.
Sodium is in group one.
How many electrons are in the outer shell.
one
Why is group 0 (Noble Gases) unreactive?
Because they have a full outer shell, so they don’t have to lose or gain any electrons.
Why are metals found on the left of the periodic table?
Because they don’t have many electrons in there outer shell.
What is an ion?
An atom that has lost or gained electrons.
Do metals form positive or negative ions?
Positive
What is an isotope?
An isotope is an atom of the same element with different numbers of neutrons.
How is the modern periodic table arranged?
In order of atomic number.(proton)
Who arranged the elements in order of increasing atomic weight?
John Newlands
