The Periodic Table Flashcards
Periodic table
92 elements that exist naturally. Made of metals and non-metals.
Metals on left of stepped line and non metals on the right.
Properties of metals
High melting points.
Good conductor of heat and electricity.
They are shiny and have high densities.
They are malleable, ductile and sonorous.
Properties of non metals.
Most have low melting points.
Are poor conductors of heat and electricity.
In a solid state are dull and brittle.
Physical properties
Describe things you can observe and measure.
Chemical properties
Describe chemical reactions.
In the periodic table the vertical columns are called
Groups.
The elements in a group have similar properties.
What are the horizontal rows of the periodic table called
Periods.
What are the properties of Group 1 metals?
They are alkali metals.
They have low melting and boiling points, and low densities. Very reactive.
They react vigorously with water.
Always produce a hydrogen gas and metal hydroxide when reacted with water.
What are the properties in Group 7?
They are halogens.
They have low melting points, do not conduct electricity and very reactive.
Fluorine,bromine and iodine are examples.
What are the properties of Group O?
They are noble gases eg helium, neon, argon, krypton and radon.
Low boiling and melting points.
Colourless at room temperature.
Unreactive.
What is an element?
A substance that cannot be broken down into other substances.
List the first 20 elements on the periodic table:
