The Perineum and External Genitalia - Not Finished, Listen to Lecture Flashcards
How does pelvic shape vary with males and females?
Females have a more round pelvic inlet
Males have a more heart-shaped pelvic inlet
Females have straighter, shorter ischial spines
** Males have more medial pointed ischial spine**
Describe true vs false pelvis
False pelvis is larger, more superior, part of abdominal cavity, contains ileum and sigmoid colon
True pelvis is actual hole between pelvic inlet and outlet. Contains rectum, bladder, genitals
Describe the contents of the pelvic floor
** Contains levator ani and coccygeus muscles**
Genital hiatus anteriorly
Anal canal posteriorly
Obturator canals laterally
Name the 3 levator ani muscles
** Puborectalis**
Pubococcygeus
Iliococcygeus
(medial to lateral)
Describe the pelvic wall
** Comprised of obturator internus and piriformis**
How is the deep perineal space bounded?
Bounded by superficial fascia and inferior fascia (Perineal Membrane)
What does the deep perineal space contain?
External urethral sphincter
** Deep transverse perineal muscle**
Bulbourethral (Cowper’s) gland
Blood vessels, nerves, lymphatics
What are the boundaries of the superficial perineal space?
Perineal membrane (from deep perineal space) above and Colle’s fascia below
What is contained in the superficial perineal space?
** Roots of the penis, muscles, and nerves.**
