The parts of the digestive system Flashcards
What happens in the Buccal cavity?
Food gets coated in saliva and this helps to kick start digestion, along with chewing
both chemical and mechanical digestion
What do the salivary glands do?
produce saliva which keeps the mouth and other parts of the digestive system moist
What does the epiglottis do?
Seals the windpipe shut during eating so the food is not inhaled and a person doesn’t choke
What does the oesophagus do?
the tube that connects the throat to the stomach which food and liquid travel through
what does the stomach do?
takes food from the oesophagus and mixes it, breaks it down and then passes it onto the small intestines in smaller portions
what does the small intestine do?
absorbs the nutrients and minerals from the food that we consume
what does the large intestine do?
absorbs the water from the remaining indigestible food and transmits the useless waste materials from the body- converts food and water into faeces
what does the pancreas do?
it plays an essential role in converting the food we eat into fuel for our body
what does the liver do?
it’s main job is to filter the blood coming from the digestive tract, before passing it on to the rest of the body
what does the bile duct do?
carries bile from the gallbladder and empties it into the upper part of the small intestine
what does the gallbladder do?
stores and concentrates bile, a yellow/brown digestive enzyme produced by the liver
what does the rectum do?
acts as a temporary storehouse for the faeces
what does the anus do?
last part of the digestive tract-where faeces leave our body
