The eye Flashcards
what is the pupil?
opening of the middle of the eye through which light passes
what is the iris?
a visible coloured ring at the front of the eye which adjusts to control the amount of light entering the eye through the pupil
what are the tear/locrimal glands?
they produce tears to clean and lubricate the front of the eye
fluid contains salt and has natural antiseptic properties to defend against infection
what are the aqueous and vitreous humours?
watery-jelly substance that fills the eye and helps it to maintain it’s shape and nourish it
what is the conjunctiva?
a thin membrane that protects the cornea
what is the cornea?
a transparent layer forming the front of the eye and light rays pass through the cornea to the retina
what is the retina?
the inner lining of the eye, it contains light-sensitive cells called rods and cones
what is the macula?
has photoreceptor cells that detect light and send signals to the brain which interprets them as images
what is the optic nerve?
where nerve cells exit the eye, there are no rods or cones here, = blind spot.
what is the ciliary muscle?
enables lens to change shape for focusing
contracts to stretch the lens making it thinner and flatter
what are the suspensory ligaments?
attach the lens to the ciliary muscle
what is the lens?
focuses the light entering the eye
