What is Home Rule?
It was the demand for an Irish Parliament in Dublin to deal with Irish problems.
What isn’t Home Rule?
It was not Independence for Ireland. The British Parliament would still control some areas like defending Ireland.
Why were Protestants worried about Home Rule?
Economic Reasons: Scared about losing Protestant Jobs
Religious Reasons: Protestants were scared that the Catholic Church would rule Ireland
Political Reasons: Protestants didn’t want to break from Britain
What did Ulster Unionists do to show their opposition to Home Rule in 1912-14?
- Up to 600,000 people signed a petition again Home Rule some even with their own blood.
- They wanted to show they were determined to resist Home Rule even by fighting. So they created the UVF & 100,000 people joined.
- the UVF smuggled thousands of guns into Ireland from Germany.
- They had powerful friends like Politicians & Generals.

They were against it, they threw rotten vegetables at the rebels.
Why did the attitude to the Rebels change?
After Britain arrested 3,000 people, executed 15 rebels(Patrick while he was in a chair) the public opinion changed & the rebels were seen as Martyrs.
