The Particle Theory Flashcards
What is Matter?
Matter is anything having & mass and taking up space
What are the five particle rules?
- all matter is made up of tiny particles
- different substances are made up of different particles
- particles are in constant motion
- the particles in a substance move faster as its temp increases
- particles attract each other
What are the properties of a solid state?
- particles close together in a pattern
- strong attractive forces. between particles
- particles can vibrate in a fixed position
What are the properties of a liquid state?
- particles are fairly close together in groups
- weather attractive forces between particles
- particles move around or slide past one another
What are the properties of gas state?
- Particles far apart
- very weak attractive forces
- particles move apart
Which state is the most dense?
Solid
Which state has a definite volume?
solid, liquid
Which state is the least dense?
Gas
Which element is an exception to these rules and why?
Water because the solid state (ice) is less dense than the liquid state. water expands as it freezes
Temperature is a measure of what?
Kinetic energy
matter in exists in three states
solid,liquid,gas
the physical state of a substance depends on?
temperature and pressure
A change of state is a?
physical change
a chemical change is when?
a new substance is created
