When did the conflict start
1987 - Palestinians in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip (occupied by Israel) began demonstrating and fighting against Israeli soldiers and settlers in what was called the Intifada, or uprising.
1990s
Peace talks began and the Israelis withdrew from much of the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The PLO agreed to stop attacks against Israelis but the uprising started again even more violently in 2001 when peace talks failed.
