Impacts Of The Conflict (I/P) Flashcards
Between the 1948 and 1967 wars..
Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians left, or were forced out of their homes and became refugees in neighbouring countries
How many Palestinians are refugees
4 million
Where do refugees live
In camps in countries such as Syria, Jordan and Lebanon. The two sides disagree on how to help the refugees
What do human rights groups believe
The Israeli army sometimes treats the Palestinians too harshly in the Occupied Territories
Example of how the Israeli army sometimes treats the Palestinians too harshly
Israelis put up many check points on roads between villages (said to prevent suicide bombers) - more difficult for Palestinians to get to work, family etc. (Restricts them)
What did Israel build on the West Bank
A massive barrier (strong fence and concrete wall)
Temporary or permanent
Temporary - can be removed once a peace agreement is reached
Palestinian view on the barrier
- it is creating a new border
- cutting into land they hope will form a future state of Palestine
- cuts through Palestinian villages
- prevents farmers from getting to their land
What has Israel done to try and create a better atmosphere for peace talks between the two communities
Israel has released many Palestinian prisoners
