The Ovary Flashcards
The ovaries and testes both develop from an identical structure
the embryonic genital ridge. There are two ovaries.
The outermost layer of the ovarian cortex (tunica albuginea) is composed of a thin but tough
dense protective coating made up of a network of connective tissue that is devoid of any cell types.
The ovary contains a stroma comprised of a connective tissue framework which is
denser on the periphery (outer ovarian cortex) than at its center (inner ovarian medulla).
The ovarian cortex contains the two major structures of the ovary:
follicle and corpus luteum (CL).
The ovarian medulla houses the major blood vessels, lymphatic vessels and nerves that enter the Ovary through
the ovarian hilus.
The germinal epithelium is a
serous membrane enveloping the outside of the ovary.
The germinal epithelium is comprised of a
single cell layer of mostly cuboidal epithelium and continuous with the peritoneum.
The germinal epithelium of the human is not associated with oogenesis rather it is principally involved in
the transport of fluid and ions by surface pinocytosis.
