The Origins of psychology Flashcards
A01: What did Wundt believe
- All aspects could be studied scientifically
- He only studied aspects that could be strictly controlled
- He studied the human brain by breaking it down - introspection
A01: Introspection
When a person gains knowledge about their own mental state. It can be observed systematically
A01: Wundts study
- Pps are presented with visual or auditory stimuli
2. They are asked to describe their inner processes
A01: What did the empiricalists believe
Knowledge comes from observation and experience.
Behaviour is caused.
Its possible to predict human behaviour.
A01: The scientific method in psychology
Objective, Systematic, Replicable
A03: Wundts methods were unreliable
It relied on non observable responses, e.g. memory. Therefore it lacked reliability.
A03: Scientific approach isn’t always appropriate
predictions become impossible if behaviour isn’t subject to science. A lot is unobservable and can’t be measured accurately.
A03: Introspection isn’t particularly accurate - Wilson
Little knowledge of causes of behaviour, may be outside consciousness
A03: Introspection is still useful - Hunter
Used introspection to measure happiness. When teens did challenging tasks = happier. This understanding could help improve the quality of our lives
