Social learning theory Flashcards
Two types of modelling
Live modelling = parent or teacher
Symbolic modelling = portrayed in media
Imitation
Same characteristics, observers percieved ability, obsereved consequences
Identification - schutts
Identify with them - same sex
Vicarious re-inforcement
Bandura - Bobo doll experiment
The mediational process - Bandura 1986
Observer must form mental representations of the behaviour displayed by the model
Bobo doll study - 1961 - Method
Either exposed to violent or non violent/same gender or different gender adult interacting with the Bobo doll. Then left on their own
Bobo doll findings
- Watched aggression - were aggressive
- 33% of aggressive kids were verbally aggressive - none of the non aggressive observers were.
- More inclined to imitate same sex
A03: Social learning theory has application
Ulrich - cause of violent behaviour was associating with delinquent groups and being rewarded
A03: Support for identification - Fox
Using computer generated virtual humans wither exercising or loitering. Whoever identified with who - they imitated
A03: Problem of establishing casualty - Siegal
Young people who posses deviant attitudes seek peers with similar attitudes
A03: Problem with complexity
Genetic dispositions, media, locus of control
Anything can influence behaviour
