In Britain in 1894 the British Medical Journal linked massage with prostitution. Two masseuses Paget and Robinson considered how to make it safe and honourable. The society of trained masseuses was formed and in 1920 the SOTM became the chartered society of massage and remedial gymnastics. In 1944 this became the chartered society of physiotherapy
