Five steps in the process

Identify the work that must be done to accomplish the organizations goals
Purpose and mission of the organization and the plans that have been established in the strategic planning process.
E.g. purchase of equipment, hire workers, advertising
Divide the total workload into individual jobs
The workload should be divided evenly and to individuals who are qualified and have the expertise.
Classify and group activities
The basic organization structure is established.
Departmentalization (the grouping of logically related activities) is done.
Establish a coordinating mechanism to ensure that all organization members work together
The various management levels and the relationship between the various departments and divisions are established.

Monitor and adjust the organization structure for maximum effectiveness
Organizations grow, and the environment changes, so the organizational structure must be reevaluated and maybe reorganized.
