The organization of matter Flashcards
Explain the particle theory
- All substances are made up of very small particles.
- A substance consists of particles that can be similar or different.
- There is space between the particles.
- The particles are constantly moving; the speed of these
movements depends on the temperature of the substance. - The particles of a substance either attract or repel each
other; the strength of the attraction or repulsion depends on the
type of particles in the substance.
what are the three states of matter?
Solids, Liquids, Gases
What is an atom?
An ATOM is the smallest particle of matter.
It cannot be divided by chemical means.
What is a molecule?
A MOLECULE is a group of two or more atoms
held together by chemical bonds.
What is a mixture?
A MIXTURE consists of at least two different substances, that is, it contains at least two types of particles.
What is a pure substance?
A PURE SUBSTANCE consists of one substance, that is, contains only one type of particle.
What is a homogeneous mixture?
A HOMOGENEOUS MIXTURE is made up of at least 2 substances that CANNOT be distinguished with the naked eye.
What is a heterogeneous mixture?
A HETEROGENEOUS MIXTURE is made up of at
least 2 substances that CAN be distinguished with
the naked eye.
What is a solute?
A SOLUTE is a substance that dissolves in another substance.
What is a solvent?
A SOLVENT is a substance that can dissolve a solute.
What does dilution mean?
Dilution is a laboratory technique that involves decreasing the concentration of a solution by adding solvent.
What does solubility mean?
Solubility is the maximum amount of solute that can
be dissolved in a given amount of solvent.
What 2 factors affect solubility?
Tempurature & the nature of a substance
What is an element?
A PURE substance
What is a compoud?
2 or more mixtures mixed together
