The October/November 1917 revolution Flashcards
What were the causes of the October revolution?
The weakness of the provisional government and defeat in the First World War, combined with the political manoeuvres of the Bolsheviks under Lenin and Trotsky, the deteriorating economic situation and the resentments of soldiers, peasants and workers, created an explosive mix.
What was Kerensky’s action against the Bolsheviks?
It was to order the printers of two Bolshevik newspapers to cease activities, to attempt to restrict the power of the MRC and to send troops to raise the bridges linking the working class area of Petrograd to the city centre.
Why did Kerensky’s action against the Bolsheviks fail?
He was prevented from his actions by troops loyal to the Bolsheviks who claimed that his actions were a betrayal of the Soviet and an abandonment of the principles of the Feb Rev.
Kerensky’s move thus gave the Bolsheviks an excuse to act.
