The Octet Rule Flashcards
Define the octet rule.
When bonding occurs, atoms tend to reach an electron arrangement with eight electrons in the outermost energy level
Why do the noble gases not react?
Because they have stable electron configurations
Noble gases don’t react, what are they often called because of this?
Inert gases
What is the aim when elements react together to form compounds?
Their atoms change their electrons to try to end up with eight electrons in their outermost energy level
Give the two exceptions to the Octet Rule.
2
Transition metals do not usually obey the octet rule
Elements near helium tend to achieve the electron arrangement of helium with two electrons in the outer energy level rather than the eight electrons of the other noble gases
