The Nitrogen Cycle Flashcards
1
Q
What are the 8 stages of the Nitrogen Cycle?
A
> Plants absorb nitrates from the soil to make protein for growth.
> Feeding passes nitrogen compounds along a food chain/web.
> Nitrogen compounds in dead plants/animals being broken down by decomposes and return to soil.
> Soil, bacteria, and fungi act as decomposes, converting proteins and urea into ammonia.
> Conversion of ammonia to nitrates by nitrifying bacteria.
> Conversion of nitrates to Nitrogen gas by denitrifying bacteria.
> Nitrogen-fixing bacteria turn atmospheric nitrogen gas into nitrogen compounds plants can use.
(Nitrogen-fixing bacteria live in root nodules in legumes)
