Instinctive abilities
1) Ability to learn- recognise familiar sounds just a few minutes after birth. Instantly recognises the mothers voice due to learning whilst in her womb
2) Primitive reflexes- including the grasp reflex
3) Social releasers- ability to cry and smile in order to encourage caregiver responses in adults
4) Orientate to social situations- can attend to visual and auditory stimulation
Immediate needs
- Warm and dry
- skin to skin contact
- APGAR- monitor infants condition
- Breastfeeding
Formula Milk
Modified cows milk (protien, Carbohydrates, lipids,
vitamins and minerals).
Preparation time- Bottles have to be sterilized, formula has to be measured out properly, has to be warmed to the correct temperature
Breastfeeding
- high quality, balanced food
- Natural made and warmed- quick, portable and free
- Confers Immunity
- Is dynamic- changes based on several factors to tailor the infants needs
WHO recommends that children should be exclusively breastfed for the first 6 months- it provides significant benefits compared to formula milk. Associated with increased intelligence (role of lipids on neurodevelopment)
