Belief in traditional family values
Supporters of family values oppose- sexual freedom, sex education, abortion, homosexual rights
Family values are seen as a married couple with children
They reject single-parent families

Believed the men should be the breadwinners
How do the new right share ideas with functionalism?
Both believe the nuclear family is the cornerstone of society
Both see instrumental and expressive roles as a key feature and believe they are biologically natural
Both see the nuclear family as providing socialisation and giving individuals key norms and values
How does the new right differ from functionalists?
Believe that the nuclear family is in decline and that it is threatening societies values.
There has been a growth in family diversity- mainly single parent families- children being raised without male role models
There has been a rise in educational failures and criminality
Growth in benefit dependant underclass- reward people for not working
