Personal Life Flashcards
What is personal life influenced by?
Interactionists ideas
What do personal life theorists argue the two weaknesses are of structural theorists?
That previous structural perspectives have two weaknesses- assume that the traditional nuclear family is the dominant family type and that they assume that families and their members are passive puppets manipulated by the structure of society.
What do personal life theorists emphasise on?
The meanings that individual family members hold and how these shape their actions and relationships.
What is an example of ‘beyond ties of blood and marriage’?
A woman who may not feel close to her own sister may be unwilling to help her in a crisis, but may be willing to help someone to whom she is not related to.
What did Nordqvist and Smart find?
They found that the issue of blood and genes raised a range of feelings. Some parents emphasised the importance of social relationships over genetic ones in forming family bonds.
What feelings can happen to donor conceived children/parents?
Difficult feelings can flare up for a non-genetic parent if somebody says that the child looks like them.
It can also make children wonder about their donors identity due to differences in appearances, about possible ‘donor siblings’ as well.
What additional problems are added for lesbian couples?
These include concerns about equality between the genetic and non-genetic mothers and that the donor might be treated as the ‘real’ second parent.
What is the evaluation for personal life?
It is accused for taking too much of a broad view. Critics argue that, by including a wide range of different kinds of personal relationships we ignore what is special about relationships that are based on blood or marriage.
