What was ordinary revenue ?
The income that the monarch received each year it was not dependent on parliament grants unlike extraordinary revenue or taxes which were granted in times of emergency ?
What happened to customs revenue in 1604 ?
Direct collection was farmed our to a syndicate of merchants, in exchange for annual rent customs farmers were able to collect and keep customs revenues. Which meant that the king received regular income and the farmer had considerable benifits.
Why didn’t parliament like customs farmers ?
It suggested that their control over taxes was being diminished.
WhAt was Bates case ?
John bate was tAken to court for refusing to pay a duty on currants which he said had not been sanctioned by parliament.
What were impositions ?
Customs durions on specific goods. In Bates case currents
What was purveyance ?
The right of the court to buy provisions at a fixed price. Open to abuse by court officials , mps disliked it.

Records of taxation which were used to determine how much an area should pay
What was the great contract ?
A scheme suggested by sailsbury which said in return for an annual grant from parliament and a one off payment to clear crown debts sailsbury proposed to abolish ward ship, purveyance and the feudal tenures
Why did the GC fail ?
Doubts on both side the commons could not be certain that the king would not accept their grant and continue to pocket feudal revenues. Plus many MPs disliked the idea of funding the kings extravagance.
What was cockneys scheme ?
William cockayne convinces the mind to prohibit the export of unfinished cloth so that Englishmen could finish the cloth therefore increasing employment and increasing customs revenue. However the Dutch took offence to this , and the English did not have the resources to purchase all the cloth so unemployment soured.
Who was cranfield ?
Cranfield was lord treasurer but fired because he tried to promote his nephew as a new favourite.
What changed concerning catholic’s in 1604 ?
Leniency lifted all priests and Jesuit’s ordered out of kingdom and in November recussancy finds were ordered to be taken in full.
What is a Calvinist ?
Follower of the teachings of John Calvin who set up a strict church in Geneva which was non hierarchal.
What was an Armenian?
Protestants who believe in free will and a ceremonial form of religion which resembled catholic practised.
