The New Deal - Negative Aspects Flashcards
Negative Aspects
The New Deal failed in pulling the nation fully out of the Great Depression. Furthermore, it may have prolonged the Depression by establishing numerous short term or “band aid” solutions and by preventing implementation of alternate solutions.
Negative Aspects
The New Deal vastly increased the federal bureaucracy, creating a system with the potential for wasteful spending of federal tax money.
Negative Aspects
The New Deal vastly increased the size and power of the federal government with the potential for becoming too intrusive in the lives of everyday Americans.
Negative Aspects
The New Deal created numerous welfare based programs which increase the potential for dependence on the federal government and undermining personal incentives.
Negative Aspects
The federal government can become too distant from the people it is pledged to serve through endless bureaucracy and red tape.
Negative Aspects
FDR ran the New Deal with no organized systematic program and sometimes contradictory policies.
Negative Aspects
Though the New Deal, FDR vastly increased the power of the Presidency, which threatened the balance of power in federal government. (e.g. the 1937 Supreme Court packing scandal and use of mass media to use “image politics” to garner more Presidential power)
