What was the FCA?
Farm Credit Administration gave money to farmers who were struggling to pay their debts - 20% of farmers benefitted
What was the AAA?
Agricultural Adjustment Agency -paid farmers to produce less so prices could rise and farmers could make more profits
What was the CCC?
Civilian Conservation Corps gave around 3 million unemployed men aged 18-25 jobs on conservation projects
What was the PWA?
Public Works Administration created jobs by paying unemployed people to build schools, bridges and dams
What was the WPA?
Works Progress Administration replaced the PWA in 1935. It created millions of jobs in construction and public buildings
What was the NRA?
National Recovery Administration - Set fair prices, wages and working conditions - 22 million workers joined the scheme
What was the TVA?
Tennessee Valley Authority - Redeveloped a large area that covered several states - soil was infertile, was flooding and poverty - implemented dams to improve soil quality and generate electricity
Why did the Republicans oppose the New Deal?
Believed in lassaiz faire - disliked New Deals level of intervention
Disliked huge government spending - e.g TVA
Thought it was no different to USSR with its communist economic plan
Who was Huey Long and what did he believe in?
Governor of Louisiana - Believed the new deal hadn’t gone far enough - Wanted to create a policy that guaranteed minimum wage and limited the wage of the rich
What was Dr Francis Townsend’s policy?
Set up Old Age Revolving Pension Plan - everyone over the age of 60 who was retired should get a pension of $200 a month
What did the supreme court do to oppose the new deal?
Ruled the AAA and NRA unconstitutional - By 1936, the Supreme Court had ruled against 11 out of 16 of the so-called alphabet laws
How did the New deal benefit the economy?
Created jobs and primed the pump - insurance against unemployment. Frances Perkins first woman to be appointed to a
cabinet under Roosevelt
How did the New deal benefit Women?
WPA employed women - although NRA set women’s wages below men’s
How did the New deal benefit Farmers?
AAA helped as prices rose - Georgia crop, increased from 1.55 cents/pound in 1932 to 3.72 cents/pound in 1936
How did the New deal benefit African Americans?
10% of the budgets for relief programmes were targeted to African Americans
Roosevelt did nothing to end segregation in the South or increase civil rights
What was Roosevelts Cash and Carry Policy?
Countries could only pay cash for any materials bought in the USA
And they also had to have their own ships to carry them away

When the Great Depression first hit, cinema attendance dropped by a third, rose again to get away from the thought of the depression WPA employed many people in creative arts work
What was Roosevelts Lend-lease policy?
FDR believed isolationism did more harm than good, so created policy that would lend or lease weapons to countries that the USA believed needed it. Britain received $7 billion of lend-lease support
How did WW2 help unemployment?
Created new jobs in manufacturing of weapons - doubled output
Food production rose by 1/3
17 million new civilian jobs were created
Industrial productivity increased by 96%
