House Un-American Activities Committee - tasked with uncovering and identifying communist threats. Alger Hiss - exposed as a Soviet spy - convicted and imprisoned in 1950

The National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People

What happened at the brown vs board case 1954?
NAACP’s lawyers won the court case, ruling that “separate but equal had no place in education” showed that segregation generally was losing its lawfulness.
What happened at The Little Rock crisis, 1957
After Brown v Board of Education ruling some school boards began to desegregate. September 1957 9 African American students attempted to attend Central High School in Little Rock - received much prejudice, Eisenhower sent 1000 American Soldiers to protect them
Who was Emmett Till, why was he important?
14 year old boy who was brutally murdered after a false accusation. The jury ruled his murderers as innocent
What was the The Montgomery Bus Boycott?
Response to Rosa Parks, NAACP and Women’s political council organised a boycott of the city’s buses. Elected Dr Martin Luther King as leader until the city met its demands1956 the Supreme Court
ruled that segregated buses were illegal after the 381-day boycott
What was the 1964 Civil Rights Act?
Outlawed discrimination in public places and employment - effectively ended Jim Crow segregation
What was the 1965 Voting Rights Act?
Protected the right to vote for everyone - literacy tests and intimidation to not vote was illegal
