What are the Senses of a Newborn Baby?
- Touch -baby likes to be cuddled
- Sight - baby can see but it’s ahort sighted
- Smell - recognises smell of parents and mothers milk
- Hearing - Baby hears well and recognises mum’s voice
- Taste - Pulls face if doesn’t like taste
What are the Basic Needsof** a Newborn Baby?**
- To give it milk
- Food (Baby Formula) to grow
- Right food to grow
- Needs a lot of sleep
- Tired easily so needs regular sleep
- Good hygiene to stop injections
- Babies need clothes to keep them warm
- Right clothes for right activities
- They need to be protected from many things
- Need to feel happy and wanted
What is in a Layette?
- Clothing
- Bedding
- Nappies (Disposable, Non-disposable)
Clothing Needs to be….
- Lightweight
- Easy to put on -** **Envelope neck, Poppers aroung legs
- Safe -** **no ties or ribbons, nothing that could get caught
What Causes Nappy Rash? How Do You Prevent It?
- Urine decomposes to form ammonia which irritates the skin
Prevent it by:
- Changing nappy regularly
- Using think layer of barrier cream - shouldnt be used on babies that already have nappy rash
- Allowing air to circulate around bottom to heal rash
- Babies with upset tummies are more likely to get nappy rash
Breast Feeding
- First 3 days Colostrum is produced - gives baby rich source of protein and antibodies to protect from injection
- When Lactation (milk production) begins it is a bluish colour that turns creamy. The milk is squeezed out when the baby sucks
Advantages and Disadvantages of Breast Feeding
Advantages:
- right balance of nutrients
- Free and convient
- contain antibodies
Disadvantages:
- Engorgement - Painful and swollen
- problems if ill - medicines etc.
- Embarrassing and can’t go back to work
Government Policy: encourage mothers to breast feed
Advantages and Disadvantages of Bottle Feeding
Advantages:
- Can be done with breast milk or formula
- **More freedom for mother - **no diet restictions/ schedule restrictions
- **Others can feed baby - **bonds created with people other than mother
Disadvantages:
- **Cost is expensive - **bottle, Nipples, brush to clean bottles, formula
- Doesn’t contain antibodies like breast milk
- Harder for babies to digest
Sterilisation
- All equpiment must be sterilised as milk is feeding ground for bacteria
- 2 methods:
- Steam
- Cold water/ chemical (tablets)
- Boil bottle and teats for 10 mins
- Sterilise using:
- Microwave
- Electric
What does Weaning mean?
Def:
Weaning is mixed feedign. It’s the gradual introduction for food to babies, and the reduction of milk consumption
Getting Started:
Start weaning when:
- Still seem hungary after milk feeds
- start to wake up in night to be fed
- Demand milk more often
What does Weaning Too Early cause?
- Digestive problems
- Allergies
- Excess weight and food refusal in the future
- Damage to kidneys
What are the Dietary Goals?
- Less Sugar
- Less Fat
- Less Salt
- More Fibre
