The Neuron Flashcards
The Nervous System
The body‘s primary communication network
The Neuron
A specialized cell that communicate information throughout your body
The Glial Cell
provide structural support for neurons
provide nutrition and remove waste products such as dead cells
Sensory Neuron
communicates information from the outside of your brain, inside the body, from skin to organs
(peripheral nervous system)
(afferent)
Motor Neuron
responsible for communicating information to the muscles and glands for the body
(peripheral nervous system)
Interneuron
communicate information between neurons
Central nervous system
All-or-None Action Potential
A brief electrical impulse that is gathered by the dendrites and cell body and is transmitted along the axon
Stimulus Threshold
minimum level of stimulation required to activate a neuron
Resting Potential
when the neuron is prepared to send a message
All-or-None Law
either a neuron is being completely stimulated and an action potential occurs, or a neuron is not being completely stimulated
Synapse
The point of communication between two neurons
message sending(presynaptic neuron) message receiving(postsynaptic neuron)
Neurotransmitter
A chemical messenger that is created by a neuron
