The nervous system, neurons and synapses Flashcards
The role of the nervous system
Nervous system acts as bodies control centre . It interprets the sensory information which enters the body via senses like touch and taste and sends information to glands and muscles
What is the CNS and peripheral nervous system ?
consists of brain and spinal cord
peripheral nervous system = consist of nerves that branch out from brain and spinal cord throughout your body
What is the nervous system made up of ?
neurons
Neuron parts and function
Cell body covered in dendrites and an axon.
Dendrites receive information from other neurons and transmit this information via electrical impulse to cell body. Impulse then transmitted to other neurons by axon.
What’s a synapse ?
located at the end of an axon . Electrical impulse travel along axon and trigger release of neurotransmitters which are chemical messengers to be diffused across synapses - gap between two neurons
When they reach the other side, the neurotransmitters bind with receptors on next neuron. There are different kinds of receptors and the neurotransmitters will only bind with the receptors that are designed to specifically receive them. message then passed along neuron to next one in same way.
