Why did Alfred Binet develop the IQ test and with who ?
In early 1900s he was asked by French Government to find a way to identity which school children were at a bigger risk of struggling at school so they could provide extra help. The test tested memory skills, attention, problem-solving skills.

They found that the test was a good indicator for the wide range of abilities amongst the students. Binet himself realised that although the IQ test was good it had limitation as intelligence is far more complex than is easily measurable by a test

a basis for an IQ test that’s still used today : The Stanford Binet intelligence scales test created by psychologist Terman at Stanford University in the USA.
Generally why are IQ tests used ?
Identify children with very low or high intelligence. Low IQ = support given High IQ = join Mensa where participants are tested and found to have very IQs appropriately stretched and challenged within their school to be able to meet potential.

Used for 6-16 years and used as part of wider tests ( tests for ADHD or dyslexia )
