The Nervous System: A Basic Blueprint Flashcards
What are the 2 main parts of the nervous system?
- Central Nervous System (CNS)
- Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
What comprises the CNS?
- brain
- spinal cord
Functions of the CNS include…
- receives, processes, interprets, and stores incoming sensory information
- sends out messages to muscles, glands, and internal organs
Define: Spinal Cord
- an extension of the brain
- protected by the spinal column
- acts as a bridge between brain and rest of body
Define: Spinal Reflexes
- unconscious, automatic reflexes
- spinal reflexes are produced by the spinal cord, independent of the brain
Where are reflexes above the neck produced?
-lower part of the brain
Can reflexes be influenced by thought and emotion?
Yes. For example, the ability to delay ejaculation, a spinal reflex.
What is the function of the PNS?
-moves information to and from the CNS
What comprises the PNS?
-nerves (all portions of NS outside of brain and spinal cord)
What are 2 types of nerves in the PNS?
- sensory nerves
- motor nerves
Function: Sensory Nerves
- carry messages from receptors in the skin, muscles, and other organs to the spinal cord, which sends them to the brain
- they put us in touch with our own bodies and the outside world
Function: Motor Nerves
-carry messages from the CNS to muscles, glands, and internal organs
The PNS is divided into 2 parts:
- Somatic Nervous System (bodily)
- Autonomic Nervous System (self-governing)
The Somatic Nervous System…
Consists of nerves connected to:
- sensory receptors
- skeletal muscles (permit voluntary action)
Function: Autonomic Nervous System
-regulates functioning of blood vessels, glands, and internal organs
