the nervous system Flashcards
nervous system
two main functions: to collect, process and respond to information in the environment and to coordinate the working of different organs and cells in the body
-consists of the central nervous system and peripheral nervous system
central nervous system
- made up of the brain and the spinal cord
- brain-centre of all conscious awareness, outer layer (cerebral cortex) is highly developed, developed into two hemispheres
- spinal cord- extension of the brain, responsible for reflex actions
- CNS passes messages to and from the brain and connects nerves to the PNS
peripheral nervous system
transmits messages via millions of neutrons (nerve cells) to and from the CNS, the PNS is divided in two parts
- autonomic nervous system: governs vital functions in the body such as breathing, heart rate, digestion, sexual arousal and stress responses
- somatic nervous system: controls muscle movement and receives information from sensory receptors
autonomic nervous system
governs vital functions in the body such as breathing, heart rate, digestion, sexual arousal and stress responses
-transmits information to and from internal bodily organs
somatic nervous system
controls muscle movement and receives information from sensory receptors
-transmits information from receptor cells in the sense organs to the CNS and receives information from the CNS that directs muscles to act
