the nervous system Flashcards

1
Q

nervous system

A

two main functions: to collect, process and respond to information in the environment and to coordinate the working of different organs and cells in the body
-consists of the central nervous system and peripheral nervous system

Q

central nervous system

A
  • made up of the brain and the spinal cord
  • brain-centre of all conscious awareness, outer layer (cerebral cortex) is highly developed, developed into two hemispheres
  • spinal cord- extension of the brain, responsible for reflex actions
  • CNS passes messages to and from the brain and connects nerves to the PNS

Q

peripheral nervous system

A

transmits messages via millions of neutrons (nerve cells) to and from the CNS, the PNS is divided in two parts

  • autonomic nervous system: governs vital functions in the body such as breathing, heart rate, digestion, sexual arousal and stress responses
  • somatic nervous system: controls muscle movement and receives information from sensory receptors

Q

somatic nervous system

A

controls muscle movement and receives information from sensory receptors
-transmits information from receptor cells in the sense organs to the CNS and receives information from the CNS that directs muscles to act
