Q

glands and hormones

A

various glands in the body such as the thyroid gland produces hormones

  • hormones are secreted into the bloodstream and affect any cells in the body that has a receptor for that particular hormone
  • most hormones affect cells in several organs or throughout the entire body
  • main glands include hypothalamus, pituitary, thyroid and pancreas

Q

fight or flight

A
  • when a stressor is perceived, the hypothalamus triggers activity in the sympathetic branch of the ANS
  • ANS changes from its normal parasympathetic state to sympathetic state
  • stress hormone adrenaline is released from adrenal gland into the bloodstream
  • adrenaline triggers physiological changes in the body eg increased heart rate which creates the physiological arousal necessary for the flight or fight response
  • once threat has passed the parasympathetic nervous system returns to its resting state
