endocrine system Flashcards
1
Q
endocrine system
A
instructs glands to release hormones directly into the bloodstream which is then carried toward target organs in the body
2
Q
glands and hormones
A
various glands in the body such as the thyroid gland produces hormones
- hormones are secreted into the bloodstream and affect any cells in the body that has a receptor for that particular hormone
- most hormones affect cells in several organs or throughout the entire body
- main glands include hypothalamus, pituitary, thyroid and pancreas
- major gland is the pituitary gland in the brain, controls the release of hormones from all the other endocrine glands in the body
3
Q
fight or flight
A
- when a stressor is perceived, the hypothalamus triggers activity in the sympathetic branch of the ANS
- ANS changes from its normal parasympathetic state to sympathetic state
- stress hormone adrenaline is released from adrenal gland into the bloodstream
- adrenaline triggers physiological changes in the body eg increased heart rate which creates the physiological arousal necessary for the flight or fight response
- once threat has passed the parasympathetic nervous system returns to its resting state
4
Q
adrenaline
A
produced by adrenal glands
-has a strong effect on the cells of the cardiovascular system- stimulating the heart rate, contracting blood vessels and dislocating air passages
