The Nervous System Flashcards
What are the divisions of the nervous system?
CNS - brain and spinal cord
PNS - somatic and autonomic (sympathetic and parasympathetic)
What is the CNS responsible for?
- important physiological processes: breathing, heartbeat and info from the sense
- initiating and controlling behaviour
What is the brain responsible for?
Information processor
Coordination and behaviour
How is the brain divided?
Cerebrum has 2 hemispheres and 4 lobes
Connected by the corpus callosum
Cerebellum underneath the cerebrum
Brain stem connects the brain and spinal cord
What are the functions of the cerebrum
Different lobes = different functions
Frontal, parietal, occipital and temporal
What are the functions of the cerebellum
Motor skills and balance
Coordinating muscles
Precise controlled movement
What is the function of the brain stem
Motor and sensory neurone transmit into through the brain stem to brain
Automatic functions like breathing, heartbeat, swallowing
What is the function of the spinal cord?
Transmits info between brain and test of the body. Controls and regulates activities in the body.
Connects with different organs, glands and muscles.
Enables simple reflex actions without the brain
What is the PNS responsible for?
Communicating info between CNS and areas outside the brain.
What is the function of the somatic nervous system?
Controls voluntary muscles
Communicates w muscles and gets sensory info from skin
Made of cranial nerves from underside of brain and spinal nerves which have motor and sensory neutrons
Reflex actions
What is the function of the autonomic nervous system?
Involuntary body functions Not consciously aware Heart beat, digestion etc Stress response sympathetic and parasympathetic NS
What is the function of the sympathetic nervous system?
Allows the body to deal w threats Fight or flight Increases heart rate Increases blood pressure Neurons communicate w glands and organs Pupils dilate Airways relax Inhibits digestion and urination Release of stored energy
What is the function of the parasympathetic nervous system?
Counters reaction of SNS
Heart rate and BP decrease
Digestion and grime resume
Pupils and airways construct
