The Nervous System Flashcards
What are the five senses?
Eyes Ears Nose Tongue Skin
What do the five senses contain?
The five senses contain different receptors
What is a receptor?
A receptor is a group of cells which are sensitive to a stimulus.
What can a stimulus be?
A stimulus can be light, sound, touch, pressure, pain, chemical or a change in position or temperature.
What is the central nervous system?
The central nervous system is where all the information from the sense organs is sent and the reflexes and actions are coordinated.
What does CNS stand for?
CNS stands for Central nervous system.
What does the CNS consist of?
The CNS consists of the brain and spinal cord only.
How do neurones transmit?
Neurones (nerve cells) transmit information as electrical impulses.
Where is the information sent form the central nervous system?
The information from the central nervous system is sent to the effectors.
What are the effectors?
The effectors are muscles and glands.
What receptor does our eyes contain?
Our eyes contain light receptors which are sensitive to light.
What receptor does our ears contain?
Our ears contain sound receptors which are sensitive to sound. Also balance receptors.
What are the receptors in our nose?
Smell receptors which are sensitive to chemical stimuli.
What are the receptors in our tongue?
Taste receptors which are sensitive to bitter, salt, sweet and sour and the taste of savoury. For example monosodium glutamate. Chemical stimuli.
What is our skin sensitive to?
Our skin is sensitive to touch, pressure, pain and temperature change.
