the nervous system Flashcards
what are the two parts that the nervous system consists of
the central nervous system e.g. brain or spinal cord
and other nerves running to and from the cns
how are electrical impulses sent from the receptor cells to the co-ordination centre
via neurons
what are neurons
nerve cells
what is the key role of the nervous system
it enables humans to react to their surroundings and co-ordinate their behavior
what happens when you tough a hot object?
- the stimulus (heat) is detected by a receptor (skin)
- electrical impulses pass from the receptor to the CNS along a sensory neuron
- a chemical is released at the synapse and diffuses across to a relay neuron in the CNS
- this triggers an electrical impulse which gets passed across the relay neurons to another synapse
- another chemical is released triggering an electrical impulse in a motor neuron
- this passes to the effector which initiates a response
what is the junction called found at the end of a sensory neuron
a synapse
true or false?
in the case of reflexes there is no decision making by the conscious part of the brain
true
how do reflexes protect us from danger
they are rapid, and automatic
