The Nervous System Flashcards
Somatic Nervous System
Transmits information to and from senses, and to and from CNS.
Controls tactile info which enables our body to identify different objects.
Made up of 12 pairs of cranial nerves and 31 pairs spinal nerves.
Nerves have both sensory and motor neuron’s.
Autonomic Nervous System
Transmits information to and from internal organs to sustain life processes.
Allows processes such as breathing and digestion.
Body carries out some actions without your awareness.
Sympathetic Nervous System
Activities fight or flight system
Generally increases bodily activities
Parasympathetic Nervous System
Rest and digest system
Generally maintains or decreases bodily activities
Sensory Neurons
Transmits information from our senses (eyes, tongue, ears etc) to CNS
Motor Neurons
Receives information from CNS to make muscles act (e.g. walking, running)
Nervous System
Provides the biological basis of psychological experience
Peripheral Nervous System
Transmits information to and from the central nervous system
