The Nervous System Flashcards
Unit 2
What are the 5 parts of a motor neuron
Dendrites, Cell Body, Axons, Myelin Sheath, Axon Terminal
What is a dendrite?
Recieves stimuli (messages) and sends to other cell bodies
What is a cell body?
In charge of neuron activity
Contains: nucleus, mitochondria and other animal cell components
What is a axon?
Generate nerve impulses (messages) and conduct them away
What is the myelin sheath?
Layer covering axon to protect it and help signals travel faster and easier
What is the axon terminal?
The ends of neurons that send signals to other neurons
The Nerve Impulse - What are the 3 basic steps to a nerve impulse?
- Sensory neuron is stimulated
- Impulse travels up the spinal cord to brain
- Motor neuron carries impulse to muscle cell in response to stimulus
True or False - A sensory stimuli goes to the brain and a motor stimuli leaves the brain
True
What is the function of the Central Nervous System?
What are the two parts?
Sending and recieving messages
Brain and Spinal cord
What are the left and right half of the brain called?
Left hemisphere and right hemisphere
What are the main regions of the brain?
Frontal, Parietal, Occipital, Temporal, Cerebellum (brainstem)
What is the spinal cord?
Carry messages from brain to the body (extension of brain from brain stem)
Protected by vertebrae that surronds it
What is the function of the Peripheral Nervous System?
What are the three parts?
Delivering messages from senses. Made up of all the veves that extend to other parts of the body
3 parts: Nerves, Ganglion and Sensory receptors
What 2 systems is the PNS (peripheral nervous system) divided into?
Autonomis NS
Somatic NS
What is the Autonomic NS?
Involuntary control of organs and life functions
