First Aid Equipment Flashcards
Oropharyngeal (OPA)
Inserted into an unconscious patients mount to secure their airway by preventing the tongue from blocking the epigolottis
Bag valve mask (BVM)
If a patient is not breathing (or struggling to breathe), the BVM is used to manually ventilate patient
Suction (V-Vac)
Used to suck out any fluids (vomit, blood, saliva etc.) from a patients airway to prevent choking
Nasopharyngeal Airway (NPA)
For a conscious (or unconcious) patient who requires airway support to improve ventilation. Inserted the NPA into a dare, creating a pathway for effective oxygenation
Defibrilator (AED)
An unconcious patient with no pulse requires the AED to deliver an electrical shock in an attempt to restart a patient heart rhythm
Non-Rebreather Mask
High flow oxygen device, placed over mouth and nose, for patients with moderate-severe shortness of breath and blue lips
Nasal Cannula
Low dose of oxygen, prongs inserted in the nose to o help support a patients breathing
Pocket Mask
Barrier device to protect rescuer when providing mouth-to-mouth ventilation on an unconscious patient
EpiPen
For a severe life threatening allergic reaction, it decreases airway swelling by delivering epinephrine
Glucometer
Determines blood glucose level (blood sugar) of a patient
Sphygmomanometer/BP cuff
The device wraps around a patients upper arm to determine a patients blood pressure
Penlight
The device is used to shine light into a patients eyes to check pupil response
Stethoscope
Device used to listen to a patients lung, bowel and heart sounds
Pulse Oximeter
A infrared light monitor is placed on a patient’s finger tip to determine the patients oxygen saturation and heart rate
Thermometer
Placed in a patients ear, mouth, armpit ( and some touch free) to determine body temperature
