The Nervous System Flashcards
1
Q
Central nervous system (CNS)
A
Coordinates incoming sensory information and sends instructions to other parts of the brain. Consists of the brain and spinal cord
2
Q
Brain
A
Centre of conscious awareness. Cerebral cortex outer layer (grey matter made of cell bodies)
3
Q
Spinal cord
A
Responsible for reflex actions
4
Q
Peripheral nervous system (PNS)
A
Sends information to the CNS from receptors and transmits messages from the CNS to muscles/glands (effectors)
5
Q
Somatic nervous system
A
Controls voluntary movement. Made of myelinated neurons (quicker)
6
Q
Autonomic nervous system
A
Controls involuntary bodily functions. Consists of the sympathetic (fight or flight) and parasympathetic (rest) nervous systems
