The nervous system Flashcards
The main 2 divisions of the Nervous system
CNS, central nervous system
PNS, Peripheral nervous system
Sub divisions of the CNS
The spinal chord, the brain
Sub divisions of the PNS
Atomic Nervous system
Somatic nervous system
Sub divisions of the autonomic nervous system
Sympathetic NS
Parasympathetic NS
Enteric NS
What is a neural pathway
Comprises of one or more circuits of interconnected neurons
Functions of the spinal chord
Receives motor and sensory information and relays it to the brain.
Functions of the PNS (Peripheral nervous system)
Carry information about both internal and external events to the CNS from muscles and glands
Functions of the SNS (Somatic nervous system)
Carries sensory and motor information TO the CNS
Controls voluntary movement
Functions of the ANS (Atomic nervous system)
Connects glands and organs to the CNS
Controls involuntary movement (keeps us alive aka heartbeat and breathing)
Functions of the Parasympathetic nervous system
Calms functioning after sympathetic control
Maintains homeostasis
Functions of the sympathetic nervous system
Arouses the body for action
Fight and flight response
Releases adrenaline
Increases heartrate
