The gut brain axis Flashcards
1
Q
Define the gut brain axis
A
A bidirectional communication line between the CNS and the ENS. They directly affect each other (if you feel sick in your stomach, your mood will decrease. If you are stressed, you will feel sick in your stomach)
1
Q
What are the 3 stages in general adaptation syndrome.
A
- Alarm reaction ( shock )
- Resistance
- Exhaustion
2
Q
Explain the alarm reaction stage of the GAS model
A
- Body goes into a state of shock
- Ability to deal with stresses decreases
- Countershock activates in a subdivision of this stage in the SNS
3
Q
Explain the resistance stage of the GAS model
A
- The body resists the stressor
- Shutting down unnecessary systems
- All energy directed towards vital organs
- Releases hormones into bloodstream
4
Q
Explain the exhaustion stage of the GAS model
A
- Body cannot maintain resistance
- Organism becomes weak and vulnerable
- Mental and physiological disorders can arise
- Extreme fatigue, depression, death, allergic reactions, high blood pressure.
- Adrenaline and cortisol released into blood for too long can cause heart damage and damage immune system.
