The Nervous System Flashcards
What 2 sections is the nervous system split into?
Central Nervous System (CNS) and Peripheral Nervous System
What is the CNS split into?
Spinal cord and Brain
What is below the somatic nervous system?
Sympathetic nervous system
What is below the Automatic nervous system?
Parasympathetic nervous system
What is the CNS?
- Brain and Spinal cord
- Control of behaviour
- Regulation of body’s psychological processes
- Brain receives info from sensory receptors, and sends messages to muscles and glands via spinal cord
Function of spinal cord
- Relay information between the brain and the rest of the body
- Contains nerve cells to enable us to perform simple reflexes
What are the 4 main areas of the brain?
- Cerebrum
- Cerebellum
- Diencephalon
- Brain stem
What 4 hemispheres is the cerebrum split into and their functions?
- Frontal
- Production of speech - Occipital
- Process of visual imagery - Prefrontal
- Regulates thoughts, actions and emotions - Temporal
- Processing auditory information
What is the function of the cerebellum?
Balance and coordination
What is the function of the diencephalon?
Link between endocrine and nervous whilst controlling release of hormones
What is the function of the brain stem?
Regulates autonomic functions such as breathing and swallowing
What two things is the diencephalon made up of and their functions?
- Thalamus
- Acts as a relay station for nerve impulses and sends them to correct parts - Hypothalamus
- Regulated body temp, hunger and thirst
What is the somatic nervous system responsible for and what is its link to the CNS?
Voluntary movement (walking)
- Transmits info from CNS and senses
- Under conscious control
- Made up of 12 pairs cranial nerves and 31 spinal nerves
What is the automatic nervous system responsible for?
- Involuntary actions such as heartbeat
- Divided into two further sections
What is the sympathetic nervous system involved with?
- Fight of flight
- Increasing heart rate, blood pressure
