The Nervous System Flashcards
What is the Nervous System?
Allows humans to react to its surrounding and coordinate a response The CNS (Central Nervous System) is made up of the brain and spinal chord
Relay Neurone Definition
Carries impulses from the sensory neurone to the motor neurone in the CNS i.e Spinal Chord or Brain
Motor Neurone definition
Takes impulse from the relay neurone in the CNS to the effector
What is the CNS
The CNS contains the BRAIN and the SPINAL CORD
A neurone found in the CNS is the MOTOR NEURONE
Sensory Neurone definition
Carries impulses from the receptor to the relay neurones in the CNS
What is the Receptor?
The organ that detects the stimulus
What is a stimulus?
The experience your body faces from the external envoirment
What happens across the synapse?
Across the synapse between each 3 neurones, a chemical neurotransmitter is diffused
What is the function of the Cell Body?
Contains the nucleus and cytoplasm
How are Axons insulated?
A fatty myelin sheath with small uninsulated sections along its length (called nodes)
