Hormones Flashcards
The Definition of a Hormone is…
A chemical released by a gland and is Transported in the blood
How and where is adrenaline produced?
Adrenaline is produced in the adrenal glands in times of fear or stress
Female Hormones Include…
Oestrogen and Progesterone
How does the body respond to a rise in blood glucose levels?
By secreting insulin, a hormone produced by the cells in the pancreas
How is adrenaline released?
Adrenaline is released into the bloodstream and it increases breathing, heart rate, blood flow and blood pressure. There is also a conversion of glycogen to glucose in liver cells, increasing blood glucose.
What does Oestrogen do?
Repairs and Thickens the Uterus
Where is testosterone produced in both men and women.
Produced in the testes for Men.
Produces in the ovary for Women
What does the insulin do?
Insulin lowers blood sugar glucose by increasing the rate that glucose is taken up throughout the cells.
Where is insulin Produced.
Insulin is produced in the pancreas
What is the effects of adrenaline being released lead to?
There is more glucose being delivered to muscles and more energy being released by respiration in the muscles.
What is the role for ADH.
ADH controlls the water content in a bloodstream.
Progesterone…
Maintains the uterus lining
Where is testosterone made?
Testes
where is oestrogen produced
made mainly by the ovaries
Characteristics of a nerve?
They have:
A very fast message
Act for a very short time
Act on a very precise area
What is the effect of Adrenaline on the body?
The diversion of blood flow to muscles and away from non-essential parts of the body.
The dilation of the blood vessels inside muscles.
The breaking down of stored glycogen into glucose.
What are all the glands?
Pituitary Gland
Pancreas
Testes
Adrenal Glands
Ovaries
What does insulin do?
It lowers blood sugar by removing glucose from the blood and storing it as glycogen
Where is Progesterone produced?
In the Ovaries
What is the role of Progesterone?
To support pregnancy
