the nervous system Flashcards
define the CNS
comprises of the brain and spinal cord and receives messages from the senses and controls the bodies response
define the PNS
peripheral nervous system- part f the nervous system outside of the brain and spinal cord
what does the PNS comprise of
somatic nervous system and the automatic nervous system
define the SNS
part of the PNS responsible for carrying out sensory and motor information to and from the CNS
define the ANS
controls the brains involuntary actions such as heart beat and it is self regulating, further dividing into the sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions
outline the role of the spinal cord
a bundle of nervous fibres enclosed in a spinal column which connects nearly all parts of the body to the brain
outline the role of the brain
part of the CNS that coordinates sensation and intellectual and nervous activity
what is the difference between the sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions
1) involved in responses that help us to deal with emergencies such as increasing heart rate or diluting pupils
2) involved in restoring the body back to natural after the emergency has gone such as slowing heart rate or constricting pupils
