What was the Naval Race?
When two or more countries compete to try and have the largest, most powerful navy
Why did Kaiser admire the British empire and powerful navy?
He was closely related to the British Royal family

They had spent a great deal of time and money building a strong navy to protect routes and overseas empire

The Kaisers desire to expand the German navy and the British determination to maintain its naval dominance

Wilhelm becomes Kaiser and immediately orders an increase in naval production
What happened in 1889?
Britain adopt the ‘two power standard’ meaning that the navy must be the size of the next two biggest navies combined
What happened in 1898?
Millions of Germans join the ‘German Fleet Association’ which put pressure of the German government to build more ship
What happened in 1899?
The British put pressure on their government to match the Germany
What did Britain develop in 1906?
The Dreadnought
What did Germany do in 1908?
They built their own ‘Dreadnought’ battleship
