They idealise family by leaving out the negatives. Murdock and Parsons don't look at issues of conflict, class or makes their position look weak.

A family has a desire to buy goods produced by capitalist industry
Why is the Marxist view criticised for being too negative?
- Marxist view is about family only being a tool of capitalist oppression and never mentions nice things.
- It only focuses on benefits to economy and the working mans boss it ignores individuals and society
- Marxists don’t explain why family works in a non capitalist institution

- Family helps keep social order but the believe the current social order make sure men have the power….patriarchal

Exploitation of women is essential to the success of capitalism and family cares for the next generation of workers which is cost free as women don’t get paid for domestic labour. Women do most of the housework even with a paid job

Culture and norms which are reinforced by family and other institutions in society. Family is only sexist as it supports mainstream culture, social change is possible if laws discriminating against women change

Portrays women as too passive and doesn’t explain how women can make changes to improve their situation.
Power in a family can be shared and doesn’t mention gay or lone parent or people from different ethnic backgrounds

Society during and after industrialisation. People moved to cities where there were factories

Ascribed is by birth and what you are born into
Achieved status is what individuals work through out their life to get the best position
