The Nature Of Science Of Nature Flashcards
This is sometimes called the “responding variable”, this is usually the variable that is measured.
Dependent variable
This is the variable that the experimenter can choose
Independent variable
The results of an experiment ( may be numerical or descriptive)
Data
Data that is in the form of a description that is NOT numerical (ex. hairy, tall, ugly, etc.)
Qualitative data
Data that is in the form of a number (54 inches, 28 people, 92% average)
Quantitative data
A standard of comparison
Control
Parts of the experiment that are the same for both the experimental group and the control group
Constant
Steps scientists use to answer questions
Scientific method
a pill that contains no medication (a fake pill)
Placebo
An explanation of natural phenomenon supported by a large body of scientific evidence (why something happens)
Theory
Usually an if / then statement about natural observable phenomenon (what happens)
Law
An educated guess that is testable (by an experiment)
Hypothesis
Where the independent variable is graphed (horizontal)
X-axis
Where the dependent variable is graphed (vertical)
Y-axis
