The nature and importance of places Flashcards
What is the difference between space and place
Place is a space with meaning whereas space is a place with no purpose or meaning.
How are insiders different to outsiders?
Insiders= Understand the social norms and characteristics of an area due to having lived or resided there. Outsiders= Don’t know or haven’t experienced a place properly to understand the social norms.
For example, In Fradley the insiders would know that bin day occurs on a Wednesday but outsiders wouldn’t know this.
How could you move from being from an insider to an outsider and vice versa?
I to O: Homelessness or move away for a while and then come back. Things like anti homeless hostile architecture can make the homeless feel more like an outsider within an area.
O to I: Stay within one place or area for a prolonged amount of time.
