The National Grid Flashcards
What is TNG
Is is a system of cables and transformers linking power stations to consumers to distribute electricity
What is transferred from power stations to consumers?
Electrical power using TNG
What do step up transformers do
They increase the p.d - 400,000v from the power station to the transmission cables and decreases current so that it can travel long distances and minimize energy lost as heat.
What do step down transformers do?
They increase the p.d - 230v from the power station to the transmission cables and increases the current so that it’s at a safe level for consumer to use
What is the order it goes in
Power station - step up transformer - national grid - step down transformer - consumer
How is TNG efficient?
Resistance causes heating which is wasted. Increasing the p.d at which current is transtired, same amount of power can be transferred using smaller current.
